History Delaware Lesson 2

In today's lesson, Miss. Julia and I taught our group of third grade students the history behind the state of Delaware. To start this lesson, we showed them the agenda and then did a little icebreaker activity. For this activity, we asked them what fun thing they did while the weather was warmer least week. Then, went over our new vocabulary words and reminded them of our classroom rules.

Next, we showed the students a couple of historical photographs of Delaware, and asked them to imagine they were somewhere in these pictures. We then asked them to write down things they see, smell, hear, taste, and feel while Miss. Julia wrote them down on a big anchor chart. After going over what they each wrote down, we went over Delawares history timeline from World Book online and compared it to the one in the book "Delaware" by Amy Miller. We created a "Cause and Effect" chart using both timelines and discussed what events were in both timelines and which ones only appeared in one of the timelines.

After creating the "Cause and Effect" anchor chart, we moved onto our brain break activity. For this we played the song "Rasputin" on Just Dance to get the kids moving. After that, we then played a quick game of Simon says and then went back to our seats to continue the lesson. Once finished with the brain break, we moved onto a writing activity where we had the students write down three things the two photos have in common, what's one thing from the past that might have influenced the present, and what is one thing they think could help influence Delaware in a positive way based on the events we talked about.

Next, we introduced the students to some important people from Delawares history, and had them role play as those people. For this activity, they had to reenact a Delaware historical event involving those figures based on an event we discussed in both timelines. We then talked about what we noticed Delaware has changed and what cause and effects contributed to those changes.

Lastly, We had the students imagine they created a time machine and could travel to Delaware's past. We then asked them to draw and write about a historical problem they would fix, how they would fix it, and what contributions they would use. We provided them with sentence starters and even gave them an example to help their understanding. They seemed to enjoy this lesson we planned, and said they are excited to see what we have planned for next week.
