Paragraph Shrinking Lesson 6

During today's lesson, the students engaged with the book "The Snowy Owl Scientist" by: Mark Wilson .

The students got to learn about Snowy Owls and how they survive. Miss Julia and I read the book aloud to them and had each of them take notes on a piece of paper on things they felt where important to remember.

We provided two anchor charts for them during this lesson. One anchor chart was about vocabulary words that they would see throughout the book, and the other was a paragraph shrinking example chart that we filled out together.

Both of these anchor charts were utilized by students when working on their own allowing them to work independently and quietly. The students then practiced their own paragraph shrinking and explain what they did and what paragraph they chose from a certain page we looked at.

The students then answered the questions on who he story is about, what one important thing was that they learned, and how did paragraph shrinking help you understand the text? They then wrote one sentence summarizing the paragraph they understood the best. We then went around sharing what we wrote down and why. They then had a little recess break so they went outside to play while Miss. Julia and I cleaned up and got ready for the next activity.

Once the students came back in, we prompted them to think about an animal they could see in the Arctic Tundra, and they used their imagination to create an animal. They wrote about the animal and what the name of it would be. After that, they colored their animals in and we each went around sharing what our animal was, what it ate, and where it would sleep. By the time we finished sharing it was time for them to pack up so we all said our goodbyes as this was Miss. Julia and I's last lesson with them. They thanked us for being great teachers and we thanked them for being amazing students.
