Reflection on Lesson #1 Beauty and the Beast.

Today, Miss. Julia and I had the opportunity to teach our third-grade students about the book Beauty and the Beast. To start this lesson, we had the students create classroom rules with us that we all agreed on and had them create and decorate their own name tags.

Then, we introduced ourselves and shared a fun fact to get to know one another. We read both the original and an African Culture version of Beauty and the Beast. When reading the cultured version of Beauty and the Beast by H. Chuku Lee, the students filled out a story map to help enhance their understanding and comprehension of the story.

After reading the original version of Beauty and the Beast, the students then used their notebooks to create a compare and contrast chart. The students all came up with there own similarities and differences they found and then shared them with one another. Once the students completed their compare and contrast charts, we decided to have them write in their notebooks which book they liked best and why. After the students answered this question, they shared out loud the book and reason with each other. The students each did a good job with following the class rules, so we gave each of them a sticker to add to their notebook. The students said they all enjoyed this lesson and hearing a different version of Beauty and the Beast. Going forward, one thing Miss Julia and I agreed on is using the puppets after a story to act it out, this way they do not get distracted while one of us is reading. Another thing we want to work on is creating more opportunities for the students to talk between one another about what they observed in the story.

Texts read during today's lesson:

  •  Beauty and the Beast by H. Chuku Lee
  • Beauty and the Beast by Michael Teitelbaum
