Geography Delaware Lesson 1

Today, Miss. Julia and I had the opportunity to teach out third-grade students about Delaware. To start this lesson we introduced ourselves and did a "would you rather" icebreaker. We then had the students create classroom rules we all agreed on and sign them. Once the classroom rules were created we told them we could always add if they thought of anything else, and we left them out as a reminder.

After introductions and rules, we gave the students a pre-assessment quiz to see what they already knew about Delaware. We told them this was just a small quiz to help Miss. Julia and I see what we could teach more about. After they finished the quiz we then went over our vocabulary list and asked them each to share one word from the list.

Once we finished reading the vocabulary words, we hung the list on the wall so the students could look back and refer to it when writing in their journals. We then showed the students an old map of Delaware that was created in 1787. We asked the students to jot down at least three things they noticed when looking at the map, and once everyone had at least three things we asked them all to share. Miss. Julia then wrote on a big sheet of paper each observation a student made and kept it upon the board for the students to see.

Then, we read the book F is for First State A Delaware Alphabet by Carol Crane. In this book, the students got to see and learn about what is special and known for in Delaware. The students learned how a Horseshoe Crab is the official marine animal of Delaware and they all shared a time when they saw a Horseshoe Crab.

After reading F is for First State A Delaware Alphabet, the students then got to look at a newer map of Delaware and took notes on what they observed from this map. Once they wrote down and shared what they observed from this map, we then all talked about similarities and differences between the two maps. After that, we talked about a couple of pages in the book Delaware by Ann Heinrichs and Delaware by Amy Miller. We showed them the Delaware Almanac is Amy Miller's book and some of the older photos of Delaware. We also showed them the timeline in the back of Ann Heinrichs's book.

After looking at these books, Miss. Julia took the students over to the rug for their brain break activity. For this activity the students got to play "Simon Says" using a compass. Simon would tell the students to do a certain movement such as walk, hop, skip, etc. over to North, East, South, West, North East, South East, South West, or North West on the compass. After the brain break, we then gave students a word search. We then let them color in their own map of Delaware and then we looked back at the list compare and contrast list we made about the old and new maps of Delaware.

Unfortunately, we ran out of time so while we cleaned up we listened to the state song "Our Delaware"and then said our goodbyes.

Texts used during today's lesson:

  • Delaware by Ann Heinrichs
  • Delaware by Amy Miller
  • F is for First State A Delaware Alphabet by Carol Crane
