Vocabulary Lesson

During todays lesson, the students engaged with the book "Juana & Lucas" and explored Juana's experience growing up in Bogotá, Colombia. Miss Julia and I read the book aloud to them and had each of them write down on a whiteboard anything they found important or interesting. We provided two anchor charts for them. One was based on feelings Juana felt throughout the story and where in the book it could be found, while the other was an example of a Frayer Model. The students filled out their worksheet based on the Frayer Model, adding their own examples they found from the book or were seen in their personal lives.

The students were then given a color by number paper that Miss. Julia created and colored in certain images that have to do with Colombia. We then asked them if they noticed any of these pictures being talked about in the book.

Miss. Julia then had them write in their journals based on the prompt "What emotions would you feel learning a new language" which helped get them thinking back on what Juana felt and relate it to themselves if they have learned a new language or if they had to.

The Frayer Model was a success as it modeled the process with the word bilingual and allowed the students to see how the word was broken down and what it meant. Being able to collaboratively brainstorm helped ensure high engagement and provided strong examples for the students. The students also enjoyed the brain break we did. The "Just Like Me" Brain Break helped them regroup to continue to learn again, while also connecting to the story and their own personal lives.
The initial Read Aloud was a bit challenging as it was a chapter book and the students had a hard time staying focused for the first few chapters. The expressive reading seemed to help with comprehension, however when pausing for "Think-Alouds" and discussions took longer than we expected. This reduced time for the final task of sharing their writing. For the future, I may limit discussion breaks during the read-aloud and save most of them for after.
