Wordless Book Prediction Lesson

Throughout today's literacy lesson, Miss Julia and I shared a wordless picture book with our four 3rd grade students. The book Yellow Umbrella by Jae Soo Liu provided a meaningful opportunity for the students to engage in creative writing and expression. While showing the wordless picture book, we played the music that came with the book so they could experience the full effect and meaning.

Because the book is wordless, we had our students focus on the imagery and color to interpret the books meaning. We then had the students fill out a predictions chart on what they think the meaning of the book is.

The students then created their own story in their notebooks based off their interpretations of Yellow Umbrella. This activity helped enhance their creative writing abilities and show us how they understood this wordless picture book. Each student used their own understanding of the book Yellow Umbrella and wrote a short story based off the imagery and colors they saw in the book. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences in each students written pieces that were created based off the same wordless picture book.

Each student then used play dough to create their own umbrella based on how they were feeling today. We then asked them to share their umbrella and what it meant. It was very interesting to see how they created their umbrellas to reflect their emotions. It also helped them get a better understanding of what the wordless picture books meaning might have been.

After the students created their own umbrellas, we had them draw the umbrella they created into their notebooks. The students then shared what their umbrella meant to them and how it could be brought into the story they created.
As I reflect on our lesson, I believe that each student met the objectives. The students were excited to share their umbrellas and what they resemble, as well as share the story they created based on the books imagery.
