Geography Delaware Lesson 1

Image
Today, Miss. Julia and I had the opportunity to teach out third-grade students about Delaware. To start this lesson we introduced ourselves and did a "would you rather" icebreaker. We then had the students create classroom rules we all agreed on and sign them. Once the classroom rules were created we told them we could always add if they thought of anything else, and we left them out as a reminder.  After introductions and rules, we gave the students a pre-assessment quiz to see what they already knew about Delaware. We told them this was just a small quiz to help Miss. Julia and I see what we could teach more about. After they finished the quiz we then went over our vocabulary list and asked them each to share one word from the list.  Once we finished reading the vocabulary words, we hung the list on the wall so the students could look back and refer to it when writing in their journals. We then showed the students an old map of Delaware that was created in 1787. We ask...

Paragraph Shrinking Lesson 6

Image
During today's lesson, the students engaged with the book " The Snowy Owl Scientist" by: Mark Wilson .  The students got to learn about Snowy Owls and how they survive. Miss Julia and I read the book aloud to them and had each of them take notes on a piece of paper on things they felt where important to remember.  We provided two anchor charts for them during this lesson. One anchor chart was about vocabulary words that they would see throughout the book, and the other was a paragraph shrinking example chart that we filled out together.  Both of these anchor charts were utilized by students when working on their own allowing them to work independently and quietly. The students then practiced their own paragraph shrinking and explain what they did and what paragraph they chose from a certain page we looked at.  The students then answered the questions on who he story is about, what one important thing was that they learned, and how did paragraph shrinking help yo...

Sentence Expansion Lesson 5

During today's lesson, the students engaged with the books "You Are (Not) Small" By: Anna Kang and "Freckleface Strawberry and the Really Big Voice" By: Julianne Moore. The student's got to explore how people feel when being called names and acting out during class. Miss. Julia and I read the books aloud to them and had each of them raise a quiet hand when they found the answer to some of the example sentences we made. We provided three anchor charts for them as well. One was the example sentences, another was vocabulary words, and lastly, was a who, what, when, where, and why chart. The students filled out their sentence expansion sheets using the anchor charts we provided for them, and the one we made together.  The students then were given colored pencils and got to draw a scene from one of the books and write what they found interesting about that specific scene. Once the students finished their drawings, we went around and shared what scene we decided t...

Vocabulary Lesson

During todays lesson, the students engaged with the book "Juana & Lucas" and explored Juana's experience growing up in Bogotá, Colombia. Miss Julia and I read the book aloud to them and had each of them write down on a whiteboard anything they found important or interesting. We provided two anchor charts for them. One was based on feelings Juana felt throughout the story and where in the book it could be found, while the other was an example of a Frayer Model. The students filled out their worksheet based on the Frayer Model, adding their own examples they found from the book or were seen in their personal lives. The students were then given a color by number paper that Miss. Julia created and colored in certain images that have to do with Colombia. We then asked them if they noticed any of these pictures being talked about in the book.  Miss. Julia then had them write in their journals based on the prompt "What emotions would you feel learning a new language...
